Who doesn’t love a good ol’ sandwich? Who doesn’t love a sandwich stuffed with veggies, creamy avocado and crunchy protein-packed tempeh which happens to be spicy and just slightly sweet too. And who doesn’t love a sandwich which is super delicious, also healthy and perfect with a glass of cold beer? Right? Who wouldn’t love this avocado and maple glazed tempeh sandwich here?
What happens when you have a new friend who happens to know where you can buy a kilo of tempeh for 3€? Nah? Serious tempeh overdose. I managed to eat almost half a kilo of tempeh in just one week, which made me kinda sick. But after a week of tempeh detox I got back on track, because tempeh is amazing. Period. Tempeh is great in salads, on soba noodles, in soups or simply roasted for a quick dinner with some sweet potato fries or in a sandwich.
I usually marinade a lots of tempeh at a time, so I have some for a quick dinner all week long. You can also bake them and just keep in the fridge for the next days to add to any of your favourite salads or sandwiches. These maple glazed tempeh slices are also delicious as a topping for soups and stews or just as a little snack (dipped in guacamole or hummus).

Tempeh is the best and you just made it look even better! Wooooow – I am craving right now. And I want to buy a kilo or five too right now – it just sounds so good 😀

There is something extremely satisfying about walking home with a kilo of tempeh 😀

Mmm… I was just reading about the health benefits of tempeh the other day! It’s so hard to find here but I really want to try it. This sandwich looks soooo delicious!!!

Thanks, Hannah.
It is sometimes also difficult to get tempeh here, but nowadays most asian shops sell them fortunately. At least the ones near me 😉

Hi Evi,
I am also in Germany right now, where do you buy tempeh? Especially that cheap? 🙂
I would love to try this maple glazed tempeh, but I couldn’t find any yet.
Thanks a lot.
Love your blog 🙂

Hi Anne,
I used to buy tempeh from bigger bio supermarkets, like Alnatura, but now I buy it in smaller asian shops, they sell it way cheaper. Sometimes they sell them in weird packaging and it’s hard to find them, so ask somebody in the shop 🙂
I hope you will find some near you too, tempeh is awesome!

This is a gorgeous sandwich, Evi! I just want to dive right in and eat it all. Lovely pictures too!

Thank you, Linda 🙂

Could I use Tofu instead of Tempah? It is very hard to find in Denmark, but I would love to make this sandwich!
green evi says
Hi,
of course you can use tofu too, though it’s not going to be the exact same, since tempeh has a more nutty and more complex flavour.
Keep it in mind that you can’t slice tofu as thin as tempeh, so the baking time can be a bit different. Plus I find tofu usually needs a longer marinading time or spicier marinade than tempeh to get the same flavours.
Good luck and I hope you will like it 🙂

“But after a week of tempeh detox I got back on track” Lololol. Yeah, sales or unusually massive discounts on fave foods always ends up in general overconsumption. Good thing you didn’t eat TOO much though! My sister once ate so much cookie dough ice cream (her fave) that she could never, ever go back. To this day, she can still hardly stand the sight of it. Can you believe? Lol. Meanwhile, if I can get you to priority mail like, just a dozen of these incredible sandos over, that would be nice. 😉 I love the combo of avo and maple! So friggin yummy. Hope you’re having a kickass start to the week. Also, can’t wait for the next new recipe! Pinning, my friend. xo

Oh my goodness, my stomach honestly just flipped reading this. I feel so sorry for your sister and I really hope such a thing would never happen to me. It’s my worst nightmare, so horrible 😀
I’ll be definitely more careful from now on so such devastating accidents will never happen! 😀
(I’m making these laughing emojis, cause it sounds so ridiculous what I write, but I mean it 1000% seriously!)

I found tempeh for the first time (in an Asian supermarket in Frankfurt, not here where I live) and tasted it for the first time baked the way you suggested. I absolutely loved it and I am so sorry that I cannot buy it here… I didn’t make the sandwiches, but we had it on bread either with cream cheese and cucumbers or wild garlic pesto. Sooo good!
green evi says
I am so happy you liked it, Adina! That wild garlic pesto sounds amazing!!!
The tempeh situation is pretty annoying here in Germany…luckily right now I live very close to a little Asian shop, where they sell it for totally cheap, but before moving here, I could hardly ever buy it. It’s always ridiculously expensive in organic shops 🙁
Orman says
Hi greenevi, this seems to be an old post but maybe you still remember the shop in Frankfurt where you found Tempeh. Or, at least the district. I’ve been looking for Tempeh for some time in Frankfurt, but no success. Not even in Alnatura.
green evi says
Hi,
I live in Hamburg, so I’m not sure about Frankfurt. Here I usually buy tempeh in bigger organic supermarkets (such as Alnatura, Denn’s or Basic), or at Asian shops. Sometimes I have to ask them, since they often change the locations, and some shops keep it in the fridge, then others in the freezer. 😉

Made this for the second time today. Really pretty quick and quite tasty!
