This apple and onion spread is possibly the cheapest and easiest recipe I have ever shared with you. Only 3 ingredients, a little chopping, an hour of cooking and you get a jar of this healthy sweet and savoury bread spread. It probably doesn’t sound amazing, but believe me when I say spreading caramelised onions and soft apples on a warm slice of bread is one of the most delicious things ever!
95% of the mornings I spread avocado or hummus on my toast, 4% of the times I make kale, mushroom, millet, carrot or bean spreads, but about 3 days a year I buy bread spreads from the store, which are almost always apple and onion spreads (those are very popular here in Germany). I really love those ones, but somehow never thought of making them myself until a few months ago. Somebody asked for super cheap recipes in one of the vegan Facebook groups and a girl said she always cooks together kilos of apples and onions when they are in season then eat them all year around. It didn’t take longer than 10 minutes and I was already in the kitchen chopping onions and apples. The spread tasted amazing and I fell in love in a second. I used less oil than the original recipe, this way I can spread a thick layer on the bread, but you can try the original version with equal parts of oil, onion and apples too. I haven’t tried to preserve it yet, but if you do so, please let me know, I would love to do it too.
This here is a base recipe. Perfectly delicious this way, but also great with other seasonings. Try these:
- mustard or ground mustard seeds
- rosemary, thyme, summer savoury, parsley
- rose pepper, sumak, cumin
- red pepper flakes, Sriracha
- BBQ seasoning, liquid smoke
- dukkah, hemp seeds, black sesame seeds
- horseradish
- nutritional yeast
- garlic

This really looks delicious and I am always in for bread spreads. My son brought a sample of sunflower-tomato bread spread from school and it was great, I am trying to imitate that at home but am not quite there yet. I will try your apple spread for sure, I have tons of apples waiting to be eaten.

I know this feeling. I tried so many good store-bought spreads and tried to recreate them but I could never achieve the exact same taste. I guess they put way more nasty things inside than we do 😀

I made this spread a few days ago. It was gone in a flash, next time I will make a bit more. 🙂

I am so glad to hear that!
I would actually love to try to preserve this spread next time. It would be so great to make a super huge portion and then have it always around 🙂

This looks so delicious! I currently have a lot of apples from apple picking and it would be good to make something other than dessert 🙂

Thanks, Liora!
I love sweet apple dishes too, but I always prefer the savoury ones, if I can choose 🙂
Salads, soups, bread spreads…yummy!

If I make a big batch how long will it keep? Thanks, Clive.

Hey Clive,
It should keep in the fridge for at least a week, maybe more if you use more oil.
You could also pour into sterilised jars when it’s still warm, then it should keep for a very long time.
