A month ago we celebrated Laika’s birthday, which is actually the one year anniversary of our new little family, aka his adoption day. Despite all the shit going on in this world in the past months, I still have to say it was the best year ever, thanks to this little boy in our life.
I won’t start today’s recipe description with how this cake tastes. Because I can’t really tell you. But if you trust Laika’s judgement, it is super duper delicious. I haven’t seen him so excited for a food in a very very long time.
Laika is not a huge fan of sweet foods, so I wanted to make him a savory version using some of his favorite foods. For the pastry part I actually used my 3-Ingredient Vegan Pancakes recipe, with a little added flax seeds for extra omegas. I made 5 small pancakes here.
For the frosting part I combined tofu, beans, and tahini in the blender. I also added a little turmeric for the bright yellow color, plus because it’s good for dogs. This ‘frosting’ was actually pretty delicious. Yes, yes, I obviously tried it. With a pinch of salt and some garlic maybe, I would totally eat it as a bread spread.
After assembling this no-bake dog cake I clearly had to spend some extra time decorating it. I went with Laika’s favs again here: cucumber, coconut, and a carrot-bell pepper candle.
But this is just what he likes. What’s great about this no-bake dog cake is that it’s easily customizable to your dog’s taste. So get creative with your version! Here are a few extras you can try add:
- Instead of mashed bananas, use mashed pumpkin, sweet potato, or unsweetened apple sauce in the pancakes.
- Omit flax there, or use chia seeds, or ground sunflower seeds instead.
- You can also flavor the pancakes with ginger, basil, parsley, turmeric, and cinnamon.
- To the frosting part you can add a little extra nut or seed butters instead of tahini. Or use mashed sweet potatoes or pumpkin puree to lower fat content.
- If you wanna go with another color of frosting you can try some healthy coloring options. Spirulina, beet powder (or juice), or berry powders are great.
- As for the decoration, there are a lots of healthy fruits and veggies to choose from. Some of the dog-safe ones are: beetroot, broccoli, celery, pumpkin, Brussels sprouts, green beans, blueberry, raspberry, banana, cantaloupe, and mango.
- You can add all the decoration on top of you no-bake dog cake, or you can also hide some of them between the layers.
Whatever you add to your dog cake, please make sure it’s safe for dogs! Some foods can upset your dog’s stomach, while others can even be fatal. So please, always double-check every ingredient. A quick google search can literally save your puppy’s life. ♥︎
Oh, and don’t worry, little Laika didn’t have to eat his cake from that stupid table covered with pink background. He could enjoy it the way he likes, on the floor.
This cake is a huge portion, even for a larger dog like Laika, so I wouldn’t recommend giving it all to your dog at once. Share it with your dog’s friends, or divide it into 3-5 portions and give it throughout a few days. Cake will keep in the fridge for 4-5 days.
If you try this recipe, let me know! I would highly appreciate if you could leave a comment and rate it. Also don’t forget to take a picture and tag it on Instagram (use the hashtag #greenevi) or post it on Facebook! I love seeing what you come up with! ♥︎
PrintNo-Bake Dog Cake
- Total Time: 30 minutes
- Yield: 1 cake 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup of oats
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/2 + 1/3 cup of unsweetened plant milk
- 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
- 100 g/3.5 oz smoked tofu
- 1/2 cup of white beans
- 1.5 tbsp tahini
- 1 tsp turmeric
- cucumber, coconut, carrot, bell pepper, etc. for decorating
Instructions
- Place oats to a food processor and pulse until oat flour forms.
- Add banana, 1/2 cup of milk, and flax seeds, and blend until smooth.
- Heat a nonstick pan over medium heat. Add batter to the hot pan (using a small ladle) and cook for about 2 minutes each sides.
- You will end up with 4-5 small pancakes. Let them cool completely (It’s best to place them in the fridge for a couple of hours even).
- Prepare frosting. Add tofu, beans, tahini, and turmeric to a blender or food processor, and start to process. Gradually add about 1/3 cup of milk or water, until it reaches a thick, hummus-like consistency.
- To assemble cake put a dab of tofu cream on a plate, then place a pancake on top. Spread some tofu cream on the pancake, then add the second pancake. Repeat with the rest of the pancakes. Don’t use more than 5-6 small pancakes for a single cake, otherwise it might collapses. Also make sure every ingredient is cold, so things won’t melt together.
- Frost the sides of the cakes with the rest of the tofu cream. Smooth out frosting, if you are fancy.
- Decorate the cake with dog-safe treats. Slice and share it with your dog and his friends!
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Cook Time: 15 mins
Please always make sure you use ingredients, that are safe for dogs. I’m not a veterinarian or any kind of expert in dog foods, so it’s best to check the ingredients I recommend here by yourself too. Thank you! ♥︎
