Vegan Joppie Sauce is a super cool dipping sauce, you’ll love it!
Joppie Sauce or Joppiesaus is a Dutch snack sauce, that’s very popular in the Netherlands and the countries around. This sweet and savory, onion, mayo and curry powder based sauce is usually served with fries, but it’s actually also delicious as a bread spread or as a luscious dressing for potato and pasta salads. My vegan Joppie Sauce recipe is quick and easy to make, requires just a few basic ingredients, and it’s totally customizable. Try it!
I’ll be honest with you guys, I’m not a massive fan of mayo based recipes. If it was up to me, I would have never posted this recipe here. However I have a BF who loves everything with mayo (and pretty much lives for every kind of vegan junk food in general). So usually we eat my kind of food on weekdays, then his kind of food on the weekends…you know, relationships are all about compromises.
Back in our vegetarian days we had a trip to the Netherlands where we tried Joppie Sauce for the first time. I liked it, he loved it, but we totally forgot about it. Then a few weeks ago our favorite vegan burger place in Hamburg started to sell it, and it brought up all memories. Not for me that much, but my BF fell in love again. So as you may guess, our next weekend project was to recreate this sauce for him, because apparently he couldn’t live without it anymore.
I searched around the internet a little bit, but couldn’t find any vegan version, so I thought it’s worth sharing here too. Because even though I still prefer my tahini based sauces, I have to admit that this vegan Joppie Sauce is pretty good too. And because my BF told me that most people actually prefer such recipes over my kale salad recipes…pfff…
What’s especially cool about this recipe, is that you can make it as healthy or as ‘junky’ as you like. Sauté the onions on water or vegetable stock for a lighter version, or do it with oil for a more indulgent version. For the mayo you can use any store-bought vegan mayo, the popular homemade version, or even a healthier oil-free version. Taste the sauce as you go, give or take ingredients, make it sweeter with a sweetener or keep it on the savory side with a good amount of salt…as always, it’s all up to you.
If you try this recipe, let me know! I would highly appreciate if you could leave a comment and rate it. Also don’t forget to take a picture and tag it on Instagram (use the hashtag #greenevi) or post it on Facebook! I love seeing what you come up with! ♥︎

The sauce looks pretty good. I am not a mayonnaise person, but vegan tofu-based mayonnaise is quite tasty.

Thanks, Angie! I’m also not a mayo person, but every now and then I’m loving it 😛

I actually have never heard of Joppie Sauce (but I like the combo of mayo and ketchup). This dipping souce sounds interesting. And although I’m not a huge fan of curry, other ingredients might balance the strong flavor of it out. I certainly need to give it a try… I’ll make one teaspon first 🙂

To be honest I’m also not a big fan of curry, but somehow it works in this one so well…
I’d love if you’d try this, want to hear what you think! 🙂

Thanks! I live in Belgian where joppie is also pretty common and since I started eating vegan, joppie sauce is the only non-vegan thing on my menu from time to time because I just love it sooo much! (Especially with some real authentic Belgian fries). So thanks, I’m def gonna try it!

PS. They should sell vegan joppie sauce, right? It would be a dream come true 😉

Hey Evi, i am always impressed how all the ingredients of your recipes come together perfectly – i have to admit though that i have never tried the original joppie sauce, so i don´t know how it should taste bit yours tastes wonderful. It reminds me of “Curry Wurst” from the times we lived in Germany and weren´t plant based :-D. My husband says it has a place now in our cookbook ;-). Thank you, Evi!

Hey Ági, I’m always so happy to see your comments, and especially to hear you liked the recipe! To be honest I’m also not 100% sure, if it tastes like the real joppie sauce, since I only tried it once probably 6 or 7 years ago….but the important thing is that it’s yummy with fries, right? 😀
BTW you just gave me a great idea now, because I want to try to make some vegan curry wurst! I’ve actually never tried it, but my BF might still remembers how it tastes, so fingers crossed 😉
