This smoky vegan Tofu Cream Cheese, or tofu cheese spread is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make vegan cheese. It’s savory, hearty, smoky, very creamy, and oh so delicious! You can use it as a bread spread, dip, or pasta sauce, it’s nice every way!
Listen, as much as a love cashew based cheeses, I have to admit it can get a little pricey. It’s a great treat every now and then, but it’s probably not something to eat all day long, unless you have an unlimited budget. Luckily tofu is a lovely alternative for making vegan cream cheese, since even the fanciest tofus out there are fairly cheap.
Besides being budget-friendly, another brilliant thing about tofu is that it’s very neutral in taste, just like cashews. So you can flavor your tofu cream cheese in a billion ways. I personally love using smoked tofu, to make a nice, smoky ‘cheese’, but using plain tofu here will give you even more options: flavor the spread with your favorite fresh or dried herbs, spices, chili, garlic, chopped sun-dried tomatoes or olives, or even fresh or dried fruits, such as cranberries, or blueberries for a sweet version.
Depending on how much milk you add, you can make a very thick, spreadable cheese (which is BTW killer as a lasagne or cannelloni filling), or a thiner dip, that’s best as a salad dressing, pasta sauce, or dipping sauce for veggies and crackers.

PrintVegan Tofu Cream Cheese
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 small jar 1x
Ingredients
400 g/14 oz smoked tofu, cut into smaller pieces
1 lemon, juice
1.5 tbsp white miso paste
1 clove of garlic, minced
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
1/4-1 cup of unsweetened plant milk *
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp chili flakes
salt, pepper
Instructions
- Place tofu, lemon juice, miso, garlic, nutritional yeast, and spices in a blender or food processor, and start processing. Start to add milk (start with 1/4 cup), and blend until completely smooth, and reached desired consistency. The spread will thicken in the fridge. Enjoy!
Notes
1/4 cup of milk will give you a nice, thick cream, while 1 whole cup will make the spread very thin. I usually use 1/3-1/2 cup of milk here, but it mainly depends on the type of tofu you use and what consistency you are looking for.
- Prep Time: 5 mins

Canβt wait to try this! Thanks for creating recipes for cheese that are also nut-free. I have nut and dairy allergies so this is such a gift. (I also live in the NYC area so we have the best bagels to test this with…)

This is such an interesting recipe! Never thought to make a vegan cheese with tofu, but it sounds like it has a great consistency. We use tofu a lot, but I have never tried smoked tofu, and that sounds like it has a wonderful flavor.
